B.K.: The first edition of Zadra is ready for printing. We offer this dialogue in place of a traditional "intro" to a magazine, to present "Zadra" to the public.
E.K.:Basically: "Where we come from and which direction we are going".
B.K.: First there was "At the Top of Our Voice" (Pe³nym G³osem), a feministic periodical. Through our organization - Cracow eFKa - we have published several editions of the magazine and now we want to offer a new, more open format to our readers.
E.K.: We have to state clearly what the new format is all about. "Zadra" will be published quarterly and will be addressed to both men and women: to all those who are concerned with the situation of women in Poland and abroad and who share an interest in feminism.
S.W.: To those who like to peek under the lining of stereotypes and popular opinion and think independently.
B.K.: Again, we are speaking here about both sexes.
A.N.: And what is "Zadra" all about? Is it going to be provocative and controversial? That's right. Are we going to go on a war-path? Not necessarily: "Zadra" first of all is supposed to be a place where current women's issues are discussed. We are going to address the cultural patterns that form a tight girdl for women as well as how those models manifest themselves in reality. Well, how about a little subversion? What do you think?
E.K.: Sure. Let's speak out! Let's give voice to our concerns. Let's take a closer look at them. It shouldn't be smooth and highly polished. We want it rough and different than usual.
S.W.: What's available to women now is either serious newspapers or popular women's press. The latter we can page through or read on a train - it contains all sorts of advice for us: kids, beauty masks, appetizers, fashion, traveling, interior design. Popular press hardly mentions women, women's press presents us as simplified creatures having a serious of generelized needs. "Zadra" will treat its readers as people - of the female sex. And that's where we will reach women at the heart of their needs - as they told us enough about the feeling of discomfort they have while reading popular press.
A.N.: The name of the magazine was born by the fireside, in the village of Wisniowa near Krakow. It was the inspired creation of a Warsaw poet, Katarzyna Miller. Thanks, Kasia.
B.K.: And finally, girls: let's not say to our readers simply "Have a good read". That's not why our name is "Zadra" (= "Splinter")
E.K.: That's right. We hope then that you'll find "Splinter"(Zadra) infectious and provocative - interesting and inspiring!
